How I Designed My Energizing Morning Routine

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of starting the day on the right foot. I was always a night person, who loved staying late at night in front of Netflix, eating something sweet, and with no goals for the next day, next month, or the next year. So, I decided to become productive and start doing the things that I dream of doing. The best way to achieve more in less time was getting up early before my 9-to-5. There’s something magical about waking up early, before the world stirs, and carving out a little time just for myself. Over time, I’ve perfected a morning routine that energizes me, boosts my mood, and sets me up for success. Here’s a glimpse into my personal routine—a mix of self-care, mindfulness, and productivity hacks that I’ve refined through trial and error. If you’re looking to revamp your mornings, I’m sure you’ll find some inspiration here!

Why Morning Routines Matter

Before I dive into my routine, let’s talk about why having a morning routine is a game-changer. A well-structured morning helps me:

  • Kickstart the day with positivity: A calm and intentional morning helps me approach challenges with a better mindset. I meditate every morning to achieve that.

  • Increase productivity: While people are sleeping, no one wants anything from you, and there’s nothing to disturb or distract you. You have 4-5 hours just for yourself. Plan every 30 minutes for yourself and don’t fall into the trap of saying, "I’ll do it tomorrow" or "when I get back from work." Plan for the task of doing nothing to be after work at night so your mind knows when to do anything—even doing nothing. Put everything on its track.

  • Prioritize self-care: Mornings are my sacred time to nourish my body and soul before the hustle takes over. Meditating while everyone is sleeping, taking my beautiful bath, eating nourishing food, or writing my new blog are my go-to self-care activities.

  • Build consistency: A steady routine keeps me grounded and gives my days a reliable rhythm without falling for any mind traps or tricks of procrastination.

  • Accomplishment: If you start your day regularly at 5:00 AM, those 4 hours before 9:00 AM can transform your whole life. Usually, getting back from work means lunch, gaming, sleeping, or doing nothing. Use those 4 hours and wake up early as an extension to your 8 hours of work. By practice, you’ll see that in those 4 hours, you can finish 6 hours' worth of work. The feeling of accomplishment every morning before 9:00 AM gives you positivity and productivity for the entire day and makes the guilt of doing nothing disappear. Now, you can do nothing proudly because of the morning achievements!

Now, onto the good stuff—my actual morning routine!

My 5:00 AM Morning Routine

1. Waking Up With Intention

Before going to sleep the day before, I make intentional plans. For example, I think about the thing I want to wake up thinking about. During my practice of getting up early, I would sleep after saying, "I will get up at 5:00 AM," and surprisingly, I’d wake at this time. I open my eyes and remember making this intention, but unfortunately, I’d go back to sleep in minutes. Below, I’ll share how I moved past this problem. From my experience, setting intentions is really important and effective! So, sleep thinking of the first or the most important thing you want to do in the morning.

2. Getting Up!

So, how do you wake up early? I’m not naturally a morning person, so I’ve worked hard to make this step easier. My trick? Placing my alarm across the room so I have to get up. I also use a sunrise alarm clock, which gradually brightens the room to mimic natural sunlight. It’s a gentle nudge that makes waking up less jarring.

3. A Quick Stretch, Workout, or Meditation

I wasn’t always a person who liked moving or going to the gym—those things felt like a big load. Here’s a tip: don’t start with all the challenging tasks overnight. Start gradually. The first day I woke up early, I didn’t exercise at all. After that, I started meditating, then a small yoga class or 5 minutes of stretches. Eventually, I began doing a 10-minute stretch or a short workout. On days when I’m feeling ambitious, I follow a YouTube yoga session or do some jump rope cardio workouts. When I start strength training, I’ll let you all know because I still dislike it! Overall, movement clears my head and energizes my body for the day ahead.

4. Mindfulness and Gratitude

This part of my routine is my favorite. I light a candle, sit in a cozy spot, and spend 5-10 minutes journaling, meditating, or planning for the day. I write down three things I’m grateful for and outline my priorities. It’s incredible how this simple practice shifts my mindset. While doing this, the best feeling of achievement comes upon me, even without starting the tasks I’m planning. This is my favorite 30 minutes in the morning.

5. A Nourishing Breakfast

Breakfast is negotiable for me. Sometimes I eat, but usually, I keep it simple yet nutritious: a smoothie packed with any fruit, almond milk, chia seeds, flax seeds, and some green powders, or a bowl of overnight chia pudding. To be honest, I prepare all of that in the morning but start eating them at 12:00 PM at work. I keep it very light, like drinking herbal tea or just water. I love fasting, and intermittent fasting is all I’ve been doing lately.

6. Getting Ready with Calm

I’ve made a conscious decision to slow down during my "getting ready" phase. Instead of rushing or always getting to work late, I enjoy a calming skincare routine and wear the outfit I planned the day before. These small acts of care set a positive tone for my day.

7. Planning My Day

Before diving into work, I spend 5-10 minutes reviewing my planner. I prioritize three main tasks for the day and make note of any appointments or deadlines. Knowing what’s ahead keeps me organized and focused for the rest of the day.

Tips for Sticking to a Morning Routine

Designing a great morning routine is one thing, but sticking to it is where the magic happens. Here’s what’s worked for me:

  1. Start small: If waking up at 5:00 AM sounds daunting, begin with 6:30 AM and gradually work your way earlier.

  2. Prepare the night before: Lay out your workout clothes, prep breakfast, or jot down your intentions to reduce decision fatigue in the morning.

  3. Be flexible: Life happens, and sometimes I skip a step or two. The key is to get back on track the next day without guilt.

  4. Find what works for you: My routine is just one example. Experiment to discover what energizes and inspires you!

Final Thoughts

My morning routine is more than just a series of steps; it’s a self-care ritual that nurtures my mind, body, and soul. By starting the day with clear intentions and small achievements, I’ve found that I can handle life’s challenges with more ease and confidence. If you’re ready to elevate your mornings, I encourage you to try out some of these ideas and make them your own.

Remember, the best morning routine is the one that works for you. Here’s to brighter mornings and better days ahead!
